Car Brake Fluids | Automatic Transmission Fluids

The automotive industry uses many fluids, oils, lubricants and greases, all developed to meet a particular need, and all being essential for the correct maintenance and safe use motor cars, lorries, vans and all other motorised vehicles.

Brake fluid is just one automotive product, it's use being essential where hydraulic braking systems are used (the most common method). In all cases the fluid must be changed at regular intervals and whenever it is contaminated. If this is not done the braking system's abilities will be impaired and in extreme cases will fail totally. In line with the importance of this automotive fluid, all brake fluids must meet the regulations set in the country of use. One example of this is the DOT classification (DOT 3, DOT 4, etc) [DOT stands for Department of Transportation in the USA].

One interesting fact about hydraulic brake fluid is that as oils damage rubber seals and hoses, most brake fluids are glycol-ether or mineral oil based.

Automatic Transmission Fluids - Dexron 2 3 & 4

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is the fluid used in motorised vehicles which employ 'self shifting' or automatic transmission systems. Normally it is coloured red or green (thus distinguishing it from motor oil and other fluids to avoid misuse).

Such fluids are highly specialised oils developed for the special requirements of automatic transmission systems. Valve operations, 'brake band friction' and the ability to allow the torque converter to operate are just a few of these , not to mention the fact that it must act as a gear lubricater as well

ATF is also used as a hydraulic fluid in many vehicles which use power assisted steering systems.
