The chainsaw (or chain saw) is one of the most common agricultural piece of portable mechanical equipment. Sometimes powered by electricity, compressed air, hydraulic power, they commonly use a two-stroke engine.

Used in activities such as tree felling, pruning, etc by tree surgeons and farmers alike, the chainsaw can be found in many tool sheds. Like air compressors they need careful maintenance and the right oils and lubrication as otherwise failure can occur. Chainsaws, being dangerous at the best of times need to be maintained to the very highest standards, accidents being all too common.

Lubrication is in fact such an important issues that each link on the cutting chain has a small metal finger called a "drive link" which locates the chain and helps to carry lubricating oil around the bar.
