The automotive industry uses a whole range of oils, lubricants and greases, not to mention degreases and 'fleet wash' products which are essential for the correct maintenance (and aesthetic appearance) of motor cars, lorries, vans and all other motorised vehicles.

Antifreeze is another automotive product, its use being essential in most if not all water cooled (the most common method) internal combustion engines. In essence these water cooling systems use water as a heat transfer fluid (other applications in industry, such as cutting use light oils), but water by itself is not an efficient solution.

In fact if antifreeze is not used, the shortcoming of water as a heat transfer fluid some become evident. One example is in very cold conditions, where if the 'freeze plugs' in the engine prove insufficient, catastrophic damage will occur. But Antifreeze does more than this, it also assists in reducing the boiling point of water (where this occurs voids can appear in the cooling system) as well as reducing the corrosive effects of water on the engine itself.
