Heat Transfer Oils - Cutting & Grinding Fluids

Heat transfer oils are in fact a coolant, which itself is a fluid which flows through a device to prevent it overheating. The heat produced by the action of the device, e.g. cutting or grinding a piece of metalwork, being transferred to other devices that use or dissipate it.

Ideal coolants have a high thermal capacity, are of a low viscosity,are low-cost, non-toxic, and chemically inert. The latter is vital if they are not to cause or promote corrosion in the cooling system. Some applications also require the coolant to be an effective electrical insulator.

The coolant used can either keep its phase (state) and stay liquid or gaseous, or can undergo what is called a phase change, when it changes from liquid to gas. The latter, when used to achieve really low temperatures, is more commonly associated with refrigeration and is thus known as a refrigerant.

Where water soluble cutting fluids cannot meet the need, oils are used. With a higher boiling point than water, the temperature of oils can be raised above 100 degrees Celsius

• Mineral oils actually serve as both coolants and lubricants in many mechanical situations. Due to their high boiling points, mineral oils are also used in portable electric radiator space heaters in residential applications as well in ' closed-loop' industrial systems.
• Silicone oils are often favoured for their wide range of operating temperatures, however their high cost limits their applications.
• Transformer oil are used when cooling and electric insulation is needed as is the case for high-power electric transformers.
