What Is Marine Oil

What Does Marine Oil Mean

Marine oil can be defined as any mineral, semi synthetic or synthetic oil used within marine engines, gearboxes or thrusters used within marine applications both fresh and salt water.

How Often Should You Change Oil In A Marine Diesel

Ideally marine engine oils should be sampled and tested through accredited laboratories to look for contaminates from fuels, cooling systems and sludges. For smaller marine craft, engine oils should be changed regularly, ideally seasonally.

How Does Marine Oil Cooler Work

When an engine is marinised, it is no longer able to use a radiator to cool the engine. To stop engines overheating water from outside the vessel is pumped through a heat exchanger which in turn cools the engine. The use of a heat exchanger stops the engine coming into direct contact which would lead to corrosion in salt and/or brackish waters.

How Long Does Marine Oil Last

Marine oil will perform until it is either contaminated with fuels, sludge's, coolants or specific criteria such as Base Number have become exhausted.

Is There A Difference In Marine Oil And Regular Oil

Every engine oil is manufactured to a specification which makes it suitable for an application. Marine oils have high Total Base Numbers than car engine oils and as such contain high levels of SAPS (Sulphated Ash Phosphorus and Sulphur) which makes them unsuitable for use in modern cars and HGV's.

Does Marine Oil Go Bad

Yes all engine oils can spoil particularly if exposed to water. The typical shelf life of a marine engine oil should not exceed 5 years in an unopened container.

Can I Use Marine Oil In My Car

Higher levels of additives used with marine engine oils would make them unsuitable for modern engines and may lead to bore glazing and/or DFP blockages.

What Is Marine Fogging Oil

"Fogging Oil" is used when winterising or putting marine engines into prolonged storage.

What Is Marine Fuel Oil

Marine fuel oils comprise of many grades from lighter distillates to heavy fuel oils. From 2020 the used of heavy fuel oils with a Sulphur content >0.5% have been banned for use in marine vessels not fitted with scrubber systems.

What Is Marine Diesel Oil

Marine diesel fuel or MDO is a blend of refinery distillates for use in marine diesel engines. Unlike diesel used on or off road they do not comprise of straight or narrow cuts making them unsuited to other diesel applications.

What Is Marine Gas Oil

Marine gas oil or MGO is similar to road diesel but has a higher density. It shares many similar properties to heating oil and does not require and preheater unlike heavy fuel oils.

What Is Marine Gear Oil

Marine gear oil has specific additives to protect against the unique environment they are used in. Additional corrosion protection, salt water compatibility and longevity. These oils can be synthetic or mineral oils for used in small outboard engines, jet skis or larger vessels requiring gear oil for steering shafts and bearings.
